F.A.Q.
If you have questions about our course and how we are working, make sure you look at the syllabus. Otherwise, this FAQ assumes that you are here because your access to Blackboard is blocked for some reason—here are some answers you might be looking for. If your questions are not covered here or in the syllabus, please feel free to email me at my GVSU email address, which is kanekot [at] gvsu [dot] edu.
Don’t panic. It happens. If Blackboard is down for you, then it’s likely down for everyone. GVSU has a robust network of servers and the university should have things up and running again soon. Stay calm. Look for a message from me within the next 24 hours if the system doesn’t come back on. Email me if it would make you feel better, but you don’t have to.
If your lack of Blackboard access is a temporary thing, email me so we can figure out how to get you through until you have access again. But you must have access to GVSU’s Blackboard system in order to be part of this class. If for technical reasons you cannot access Blackboard, you can contact GVSU IT (web address below) for support.

If Blackboard goes down for any lengthy period of time, check your email for a message from me. The course schedule and your due dates are posted to this website. There will likely be links or pdfs on the materials page (link below) to help you .
If Blackboard goes down, we will all know that it is down. Just submit your work whenever Blackboard comes back up. Please do not email me your work, even if you just want to prove to me that it was done on time. You will not be penalized if the system goes down.
Remember that there is the morning after grace period with every assignment for our course. And remember that while it’s important that we stay on schedule, I’m not interested in penalizing anyone when the technology fails us. Submit your work when you can. I’ll email you if we have a problem, and then we’ll solve it together. Email me if it would make you feel better, but you don’t have to.
No. Please do not email me your work. My email inbox is a wasteland of academic announcements, departmental emails, university surveys, and spam, all of which will swallow your work whole. The best thing to do is to submit your work on Blackboard so that it’s there when your classmates or I go looking for it.
Yes, actually. This course operates in great part with the expectation that we are all honest with one another about when and where the technology fails us. But here’s the thing—if the system is down, I’ll know because you won’t be the only one affected. And it will become obvious who’s trying to game the system after a while. So, yeah—I trust everyone because I’ll eventually know if there is someone I can’t trust.
I can’t answer this for you. What I can say is that if you are struggling in our class because of developments resulting from COVID-19 (or for any reason, really), please contact me. I don’t need to know all the gory details you don’t wish to share, but I want to work with you and I can only do that with clear lines of communication. Shoot me an email so we can figure this out.
